Market in a nutshell

• Markets opened strong but witnessed a volatile session with alternate bouts of buying and selling. The broader indices ended the day with marginal losses. Sensex closed at 16,608 (down 23 points) while Nifty closed at 4,838 (down 19 points). Banking and oil and gas stocks witnessed buying interest.
• BSE Midcap Index was down 2% to 7,058, while BSE Smallcap Index declined 3% to 9,174.
• BSE Consumer Durable Index shed 4% to 4,343, with Videocon down 5% to INR 371. BSE Bankex advanced 1% to 9,867, with Axis Bank up 7% to INR 990.
• Nifty February Futures were trading at a discount of 20 points to spot for major part of the session, which increased to 50 points during the last half hour.
• Market breadth was negative with an Advance: Decline Ratio of 1:5. Century Textiles fell 7% to INR 778, while Reliance Capital gained 5% to INR 1,696.
• Cash volumes were at INR 138,017 (NSE) as against a 5 DMA of INR 146,614 mn. F&O volumes were at INR 362,235 mn as against a 5 DMA of INR 408,009 mn.

Eye Catchers

• Sesa Goa gained 6% to INR 3,013 with volumes of 252,315 (up 110%).
• EKC fell 13% to INR 273 with volumes of 216,821 (up 110%).

Market News

• Rupee was steady at INR 39.65 against the dollar.
• Nymex crude was trading at $93.59/bbl. Base metals were trading on a strong note, with lead up 2%.
