Market 8th August 2008, Rupee strengthened & Crude below $120/bbl

  Market in a nutshell

  • Markets opened on a dull note and slowly moved into negative territory. Afternoon trades saw the indices recover from the days lows and close almost flat. Sensex closed at 15,167 (up 50 points) while Nifty ended the day at 4,530 (up 6 points).
  • Nifty August Futures were trading at a premium of around 15-20 points to spot for major part of the session.
  • BSE Bankex and Metal Index both advanced around 1.5% to 7,395 and 13,099 respectively. Kotak Bank gained 6% to INR 639, while Sterlite Industries was up 4% to INR 639.
  • Market breadth was almost neutral with an Advance: Decline Ratio of 9:10. Aptech climbed 7% to INR 231, while Cairn fell 5% to INR 233.
  • Cash volumes were at INR 179,658 mn (NSE+BSE) as against a 5 DMA of INR 221,690 mn. F&O volumes were at INR 471,205 mn as against a 5 DMA of INR 511,866 mn.

 Eye Catchers

  • Tata Chemicals gained 6% to INR 347 with volumes of 1,606,238 (up 250%).

Market News

  • Rupee strengthened to trade at INR 42.08 against the dollar.
  • Nymex crude fell to trade at $117.76/bbl. Base metals were trading on a strong note with lead up 3%.
