Market 5th August 2008, Banking and Financial sector zoomed

  Market in a nutshell

  • Markets opened on an uncertain note and hovered around yesterday’s close during morning trades. However afternoon trades saw a sudden spike in buying activity which led the Sensex to finally close at 14,961 (up 383 points) while Nifty ended the day at 4,503 (up 108 points).
  • Nifty August Futures were trading at a premium of 15-20 points to spot for major part of the session.
  • BSE Bankex and Realty Index both advanced around 7% to 7,218 and 5,575 respectively. ICICI Bank surged 8% to INR 693, while Peninsula Land advanced 9.5% to INR 78.
  • Market breadth was positive with an Advance: Decline Ratio of 2.2:1. HCL Technologies advanced 9% to INR 240, while Sterlite fell 7% to INR 581.
  • Cash volumes were at INR 242,694 mn (NSE+BSE) as against a 5 DMA of INR 195,737 mn. F&O volumes were at INR 526,928 mn as against a 5 DMA of INR 560,262 mn.

Eye Catchers

  • Ashok Leyland rose 9% to INR 32 with volumes of 15,563,671 (up 700%).
  • Indian Bank gained 11% to INR 118 with volumes of 2,821,046 (up 200%).

Market News

  • Rupee appreciated to trade at INR 42.21 against the dollar, due to fall in dollar demand from oil importers and recovering equity markets.
  • Nymex crude fell sharply to trade at $119.4/bbl. Base metals were trading on a weak note with lead leading the pack of losers down 6%.
  • Nagarjuna Construction secured orders worth INR 4.44 bn from domestic clients for construction related works.
