Market in a nutshell
- Markets opened on a subdued note but traded with a positive bias during morning trades. Afternoon trades led the indices to decline into the red, but recover again. However the final hour saw renewed selling pressure leading the Sensex to finally close at 14,578 (down 79 points) while Nifty ended the day at 4,395 (down 19 points).
- Nifty August Futures were trading at a premium of 10 points to spot for major part of the session.
- BSE Consumer Durable Index marched ahead 4% to 3,856 with Titan gaining 8.5% to INR 1,275. BSE Metal Index advanced 2% to 13,524, with Ispat surging 10% to INR 30.
- Market breadth was positive with an Advance: Decline Ratio of 2.5:1. Essar Oil rallied 17% to INR 232, while JSW Steel gained 9% to INR 872.
- Cash volumes were at INR 195,406 mn (NSE+BSE) as against a 5 DMA of INR 192,046 mn. F&O volumes were low at INR 433,646 mn as against a 5 DMA of INR 563,535 mn.
Eye Catchers
- Jindal Stainless was up 9% to INR 145 with volumes of 808,018 (up 350%).
- Aditya Birla Nuvo fell 6% to INR 1,259 with volumes of 182,790 (up 250%).
Market News
- Rupee fell to trade at INR 42.48 against the dollar, due to dollar demand in anticipation of an increase in crude prices.
- Nymex crude rose to trade at $125/bbl. Base metals were trading on a weak note with lead leading the pack of losers down 4%.
- Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd bagged an order worth INR 2 bn for a hydro-electric power project in Vietnam.
