Market 21st July 2008, Rupee strengthened to trade at INR 42.7 against the dollar

 Market in a nutshell

  • Markets opened on a positive note but experienced uncertainty as they edged upwards. However, the final trading hour witnessed a spurt of buying activity in index heavyweights which led the Sensex to finally close at 13,850 (up 215 points) while Nifty closed at 4,160 (up 67 points).
  • Nifty July Futures were trading at a discount of 3-5 points to spot, which moved to a premium of 5 points due to short covering.
  • Tomorrow’s session will be interesting as the markets would keenly follow the developments taking place in the capital where the government will undergo a trust vote to prove its majority in the parliament.
  • BSE Bankex gained 4% to 6,429, with Bank of Baroda up 7% to INR 231. BSE Healthcare was up 3% to 4,111, with Ranbaxy surging 5% to INR 458.
  • Market breadth was almost neutral with an Advance: Decline Ratio of 0.8:1. National Aluminum rallied 8% to INR 387, while IDFC tanked 15% to INR 93.
  • Cash volumes were at INR 150,480 mn (NSE+BSE) as against a 5 DMA of INR 162,286 mn. F&O volumes were at INR 439,422 mn as against a 5 DMA of INR 458,105 mn.

Eye Catchers

  • Strides Arcolab advanced 4% to INR 144 with volumes of 181,001 (up 450%).

Market News

  • Rupee strengthened to trade at INR 42.7 against the dollar.
  • Nymex crude fell to trade at $130.58/bbl. Base metals were trading on a weak note with zinc down 1%.
  • IVRCL Infrastructures & Projects bagged five orders worth over INR 3.51 bn for construction related works.
