Market in a nutshell
- The markets opened on a mild positive note owing to slightly lower than expected inflation numbers and softness in crude. Indices traded on a flat note till afternoon but frenzied buying in index majors led by RIL, Bharti and banking counters triggered a solid rally. Software stocks remained weak. Sensex finally closed at 13,635 (up 524 points) while Nifty closed at 4,092 (up 145 points).
- Short covering led Nifty discount to narrow down to 13-14 points to spot from 25-26 points in the start.
- BSE Bankex soared 8% to 6,189, with ICICI Bank rocketing 12% to INR 617. BSE Realty Index advanced 5.5% to 4,670 with Ansal Infrastructure surging 8% to INR 94.
- Market breadth was positive with an Advance: Decline Ratio of 2:1. IDFC rallied 15% to INR 110, while Mphasis lost 7% to INR 189.
- Cash volumes were at INR 182,126 mn (NSE+BSE) as against a 5 DMA of INR 161,712 mn. F&O volumes were at INR 527,949 mn as against a 5 DMA of INR 452,815 mn.
Eye Catchers
- Satyam Computers plunged 7.5% to INR 384 with volumes of 21,419,186 (up 630%).
- Chennai Petroleum gained 6% to INR 305 with volumes of 1,328,323 (up 570%).
Market News
- Rupee was stable trading at INR 42.81 against the dollar.
- Nymex crude eased for a third successive day to trade at $131.85/bbl. Base metals were trading on a strong note with zinc up 2.5%.
