Market 17th July 2008, crude further cooled to trade at $134.07/bbl & Rupee strengthened against dollar

 Market in a nutshell

  • The bears eased their grip on the markets, as bourses opened with a positive gap and remained strong through the day. Sensex finally closed at 13,112 (up 536 points) while Nifty closed at 3,947 (up 131 points).
  • Nifty July Futures were trading at a discount of 20 points to spot for major part of the session.
  • BSE Bankex and Capital Goods Index both surged around 6% to 5,728, and 10,762 respectively. Axis Bank rallied 9% to INR 636, while L&T gained 7.5% to INR 2,440.
  • Market breadth was positive with an Advance: Decline Ratio of 2:1. IVRCL Infrastructure gained 14% to INR 295, while Steel Authority lost 5.5% to INR 120.
  • Cash volumes were at INR 165,729 mn (NSE+BSE) as against a 5 DMA of INR 160,504 mn. F&O volumes were at INR 463,001 mn as against a 5 DMA of INR 431,506 mn.

Eye Catchers

  • Polaris advanced 16% to INR 79 with volumes of 5,565,435 (up 800%).

Market News

  • Rupee strengthened to trade at INR 42.81 against the dollar, due to strong equity markets.
  • Nymex crude cooled to trade at $134.07/bbl. Base metals were trading on a weak note with zinc down 2.5%.
