Market in a nutshell
- Markets witnessed a disappointing session, sinking on opening and declining steadily through the session. Selling was witnessed across the board especially in heavyweights such as Reliance (down 3.5%) and ICICI Bank (down 9%). Sensex finally closed at 12,676 (down 654 points), while Nifty ended the day at 3,861 (down 179 points).
- Nifty July Futures were trading at a discount of 30 points to spot for major part of the session, which increased to 40 points during the last hour.
- BSE Bankex tanked 8% to 5,508, with HDFC Bank tumbling 11% to INR 916. BSE Realty Index plunged 5.5% to 4,504, with Purvankara down 8% to INR 166.
- Market breadth was dismal with an Advance: Decline Ratio of 1:8. Ranbaxy slid further 14% to INR 409, while IVRCL Infrastructure slipped 10% to INR 268.
- Cash volumes were at INR 149,279 mn (NSE+BSE) as against a 5 DMA of INR 163,001 mn. F&O volumes were at INR 441,229 mn as against a 5 DMA of INR 429,835 mn.
Eye Catchers
- Aditya Birla Nuvo fell 6.5% to INR 1,097 with volumes of 86,196 (up 800%).
Market News
- Rupee fell sharply to trade at INR 43.18, due to weak equity markets.
- Nymex crude rose to trade at $146.3/bbl. Base metals were trading on a weak note with zinc down 1%.
